Working Holiday vs Skilled Visa: Which is Right for You?
By MovetoOZ Team · 24 April 2026
The 417 Working Holiday Visa and the 189 Skilled Independent Visa are the two most common ways Brits land in Australia. They're very different.
Working Holiday (417) is for the under-35s. You can come within weeks, work for any employer for up to 6 months, and travel freely. Extensions are possible with regional work. It's casual, flexible, and a great way to "try before you buy."
Skilled Independent (189) is permanent residency from day one. But you need a positive skills assessment, 65+ points (most successful applicants have 85+), and English proficiency. Processing takes 12–18 months.
Our advice: If you're under 35 and unsure, do the 417 first. It buys you time to find a sponsor for a 482 or to build the experience for a 189.
